Developing therapeutic communication skills in mental health: evaluation of a teaching and learning resource
Abstract:
This project aims to evaluate the effects of a DVD demonstrating simulated teamworking and therapeutic communication skills in mental health on students’ learning. The DVD demonstrates communication with a seriously depressed, suicidal patient , a young person with psychotic symptoms and a distressed relative through the use of two case scenarios. Professional communication and teamworking is also demonstrated between the medical and nursing staff. Patients and relatives are portrayed by actors and staff are portrayed by relevant health care professionals. A pilot study, which utilised some parts of the DVD demonstrated that students found the it helpful in their learning and this main study will allow full evaluation of the DVD for all students. The DVD will be used with medical and nursing students and also an interprofessional group of medical, and nursing students. It will be evaluated through the use of questionnaires and Likert data. The project will also develop the DVD for wider use internally and externally through the use of webstreaming.
