Dear Final Year Student,
Would you know how to obtain informed consent from someone with a communication disability?
Are you clear what your legal responsibilities are?
Did you know that up to 2% of the population are estimated to have a significant communication disability? This means that you are likely to work with patients/clients who have communication difficulties at some stage, whatever your profession or area of practice.
We would like to tell you about a new opportunity to prepare for this aspect of practice before you finish your training. We are inviting final year students from the following professions at QMUL and City University to take part:
medicine, nursing (adult & mental health), speech & language therapy, midwifery and radiography.
Two training sessions will be facilitated by a highly experienced external trainer, together with service-user trainers who themselves have communication disabilities. Topics covered will include communication disability and autonomy, professional responsibilities and the ethico-legal context, identifying communication support needs, and practical skills to facilitate communication about consent. The sessions will be evaluated using a questionnaire and a focus group interview. These sessions are running as part of a CETL funded project, which is led by Dr Celia Woolf.
The following groups are running during the Spring Term 2009, and you can sign up for the pair of dates that suit you best.
